Finding a baby bird

Bird Rescue Steps
  1. Evaluate the situation using the chart "Help I've found a baby Bird"

  2. Check for injuries and stop any bleeding using corn starch or flour. Birds have a poor sense of smell- the parents will return to accept the bird despite touching it.

  3. Secure the bird in an animal carrier or cage. If you cannot find one, a cardboard box with holes will suffice. Be sure to put a perch or towel down so the bird has something to grip onto.

  4. Provide a heat source for the bird. Put a heat pad on low down or use 'Hot Hands'. See DIY Heat source below for homemade options.

  5. Join the Hawai`i Bird Rescue Facebook group and make a post of the bird including:

    1. A picture of the bird

    2. Your location

    3. If you need a foster or mentor

    4. Whether you can transport the bird and the time frame you can meet someone.

  6. Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling the bird.

Creating DIY Heat source

What You Need

  • 1 Clean Cotton Sock

  • 1 Cup of Rice

  • A piece of yarn, ribbon, or string

  • Scissors

  1. Fill the sock with uncooked rice. Don’t pack the rice in too tightly, allow some room for the rice to move around so that it can mold easily.

  2. Tie the open end of the sock with the piece of string or ribbon. If you have a longer sock you can also tie the end to keep the rice from spilling out.

  3. Put the rice-filled sock in the microwave on high for about 45sec-1 minute (time may vary depending on your oven).

After you have created your rice sock, cover the sock with a thin towel and place the bird near (NOT ONTOP) the rice sock. Make sure there is area for the bird to move away from the heat source to prevent overheating,
