Basic Supplies Needed

  • Transport Carrier

    A hard carrier with a towel lined on the bottom is the safest way to secure a bird. Carriers like the one pictured above have ample airflow.

    For larger bird, we recommend cat or dog carriers. But be sure to make sure the bird cannot escape or get injured trying to squeeze through the bars.

  • Heat Pad

    A basic heat pad to warm the sick, orphaned or injured bird.

    You can also make a DIY Heat source like a rice sock.

    On the go options include:

    Hot Hands or an portable electric hand warmer

  • Coffee stirrer

    Used to feed gaper birds off of.

    Other options include: Soft side of tooth pick, soft side of skewer, skinny popsicle sticks

  • Syringe

    10ml - 50ml leur lock plastic syringe

    Tip: Purchase in a pack of 50-100 and use a fresh syringe every 2 days.

  • Silicon Feeding Tube

    Silicon Feeding Tube 2.0 mm 2 inch Long

    Used during Crop feeding. Attaches to the syringe. Make sure to check the diet and feeding styles of each bird. This is not appropriate for gapers.

    Other option: Metal Crop Needle

  • Metal Crop Needle

    Metal Crop needle

    Attaches to a syringe during crop feeding. Can be boiled for sanitation.

    Do not purchase straight crop needles. They should have a curve to them.

  • Bird Cage

    Purchase a cage large enough that your bird can hop to multiple levels.
