      <image:title>Feeding - Feeding a Baby Bird</image:title>
<image:caption>After evaluating the situation to which the baby bird was found and if it requires intervention- chances are, if the bird is healthy, it will need to be fed. For many of us, the idea of leaving a baby bird to their own devices is unthinkable. It’s important to remember that some of the birds will not enjoy human contact and attempt to wiggle or fly free. Most birds require feeding from Sunrise to 2 hours after Sundown. This ensures they are receiving optimal nutrition. Sick or injured birds may need more tender love and care and require feeding later into the evening. However, birds do need to rest so that their stomachs and crops can completely empty. Each bird species requires different sources of nutrients. Check within this website for the correct feeding instructions. If you are confused or need clarification on identifying a species or feeding requirements, please reach out to us via Facebook messenger or join the group. Scroll down to see the style of feedings Below!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Illness and Injuries - First Steps</image:title>
<image:caption>Securing the bird in an enclosure will ensure the safety of yourself and the bird. If you do not have a cage or carrier available, you can use a cardboard box with a towel on top. Make sure the bird has access to a shallow small water dish and appropriate foods. Place the bird on a towel so that it can stand with a steady grip Under part of the towel you can place a heat pad on low, a rice sock (a sock filled with uncooked rice heated in a microwave for 1 minute) or with ‘Hot Hands’ Wash your hands after handling the bird. Connect with us. Providing a heat source will help the bird use less of their energy to keep warm.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Found a baby bird - Creating DIY Heat source</image:title>
<image:caption>What You Need 1 Clean Cotton Sock 1 Cup of Rice A piece of yarn, ribbon, or string Scissors Fill the sock with uncooked rice. Don’t pack the rice in too tightly, allow some room for the rice to move around so that it can mold easily. Tie the open end of the sock with the piece of string or ribbon. If you have a longer sock you can also tie the end to keep the rice from spilling out. Put the rice-filled sock in the microwave on high for about 45sec-1 minute (time may vary depending on your oven). After you have created your rice sock, cover the sock with a thin towel and place the bird near (NOT ONTOP) the rice sock. Make sure there is area for the bird to move away from the heat source to prevent overheating,</image:caption>

<image:title>Ducks - The most common ducks found in Hawaii are Mallards and Muscovy.</image:title>
<image:caption>Mallards and Native Hawaiian Koloa are very similar in appearance. Only trained officials can identify the koloa. Muscovy are a domesticated breed who are not meant to be wild in Hawaii. They normally do not survive in the wild, but as they are a tropical breed from South America, and have few predators here, they have a better chance of survival. We, however, work to find forever homes for them in order to assure their safety. Muscovy look like geese, but are closer to ducks. They can be various shades black, white and faded brown and are identifiable by their red bumpy face masks (caruncles). Muscovy ducklings can look identical to mallard ducklings, or their own yellow and brown patterns. Adult Muscovy do not quack. Males huff and females chirp. Males are also considerably larger than females.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Cage Care</image:title>
<image:caption>Cleaning tip! If you have wild birds, parrots or any birds for that matter- you don’t want to spread diseases. Whenever you pick up a cage, purchase one used or put a sick bird inside of your own cage—- ! We suggest using 10% bleach dilution mixture or something as strong to kill all germs. Then leave the cage out in the sun for an extended period of time (2-4 weeks) prior to putting your bird inside. You should be disinfecting the cage multiple times before using it again if the subject bird was previously sick. Especially if you own or foster any parrots. Some parrot species are known to carry a highly contagious disease known as Beak and Feather. Ring-necks, Love birds and Conures—any domestic bird for that matter can be infected with it. This is a viral disease that will infect your domestic bird for its entire lifetime and often times can be fatal. Sick birds should never be put with healthy birds or anywhere near them. Not even if they are the same species. Isolation of sick birds is critical when protecting the health of the remainder of your flock.</image:caption>
